Generic Controller U Say? Try iPega Wolverine BT Controller

First post! Well if you take a look at the date of this post, you would understand why I started blogging :D.

I'm a casual gamer (or avid?) I don't know how I would categorize my self now but there is no day that I will not play whether it mobile games or PC games for a couple of hours. I even invested in upgrading my PC to meet the requirements of the AAA games available in line with my genre. I personally like FPS games but due to some condition, I can't play them now (I get nauseous whenever I play one even for just 5 minutes) so I started playing games that are in third-person view, GTA, AC etc. and I'm hooked again.

Playing is fun, but not when it's humid and hot. Since our room with AC is just 5 steps away and with TV that is only On when we watch movies, I ran an HDMI cable from my CPU to the TV and voila, I have an instant gaming console. I didn't want to bring my KB & mouse nor buy new set instead, I bought a Generic Controller, the iPega PG-9099 for Php. 747 + Shipping here:
Lazada

Connected to Windows 10 as X-Input Mode (Detected as XBOX 360 Controller)

I already have the iPega PG-9157 but mostly use it for my android phone. Yes, the iPega controllers are built for mobile phone usage but it also supports Windows with little button hold tricks. First, this is the quick spec of the iPega PG-9099:

Here are some features from the manufacturer:

Different modes of connection/usage:

The manual that comes with the controller is in Mandarin and I barely understood it using Google Translate but for your comfort and peace of mind, here's my version of the manual. There are 2 different connection modes for this controller, here they are:
  • BT Connection - mostly for Android devices but also available for Windows
         Android:
         1. Make sure the controller is off, then simultaneously hold Home + X button until 4 LED indicators in the middle flashes.

         2. Turn on Bluetooth on your Android device and search for PG-9099, tap/click on it for pairing and when LED 1 is lit, you're DONE.

         Windows: (Windows 10 tested) - this is D-Input Mode
         1. Same as for android
         2. Open Start, type Bluetooth and Other Device Settings, click the first one.
         3. Turn on Bluetooth then click on +Add Bluetooth or other device
         4. Click Bluetooth and search for PG-9099. Click on it and when LED 1 is lit, you're DONE.
          **While in this mode, you can press the Home button and it will turn your controller in to a mouse (LED 2 is lit):
            Left Stick = Fast cursor movement
            Right Stick = Slow cursor movement
            L1 = Left Click
            R1 = Right Click
            Y = Volume Up
            A = Volume Down
  • Wired Mode - for Windows (X-Input Mode), PS3
          Windows: (Windows 10 tested) - this is X-Input mode
         1. Make sure the controller is off, Hold Start button then plug it to your PC. LED 1 & 3 will flash.
         2. Wait for the drivers to be installed. LED 2 will turn on, this is D-Input Mode, detected as PS3 Controller.
         3. Hold Home button until LED 3 is lit, this is X-Input mode, detected as XBOX 360 Controller.

I tried this with my old iPega-9157 and found out that they have the same feature except for the colorful LEDs and the dual motor.

With different modes available, you can play any games and adjust the mode depending on what the game supports but most Windows games supports X-Input mode natively.

BT Connection for Windows is limited to D-Input Mode and not all Windows games supports it out-of-the box (D-Input is a legacy API) but there is a software that you can use to transform D-Input to X-Input. I'll share it with you with full guide in my next post.

Happy gaming, CIAO!
